Shirley Fessler has been a Victim Advocate in the Johnson County, Kansas District Attorney’s Office since 1991. She has assisted victims of violent crimes and their families, including homicide, aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, and domestic violence, sexual assault, and child sexual and physical abuse. She aids prosecutors in trial preparation, which includes witness coordination and victim/witness interviews.

Shirley also coordinated the Johnson County Rape Evidence Collection Team from 1991 through 2005. She was instrumental in implementing the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program in Johnson County and facilitates the Sexual Assault Response Team, and provides training on sexual assault to law enforcement officers at the Johnson County Police Academy.

Since 2003 Shirley has been the Vice President of the Kansas Victim Assistance Association, is a founding member of the Trauma Support Network and has been on the Board of Directors since 2002. In addition, she is a member of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation and provides crisis response as a member of the Trauma Support Network.
