Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Traumatized Youth

This presentation will provide an overview of trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT). TF-CBT addresses the needs of children with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other issues related to experiencing traumatic life events, and their parent/caregiver. TF-CBT was developed by Dr. Judy Cohen, Dr, Tony Mannarino and Dr. Esther Deblinger. TF-CBT is a model that combines trauma sensitive interventions and cognitive-behavioral therapy. TF-CBT is a short term intervention, 12-16 sessions, including individual and joint parent/child sessions. The focus is providing information and skill development in order to process the trauma. Skill development including: handling distressing thought, feelings and behaviors; enhancing safety and parenting skills.

Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the impact of trauma on child development.
  • Participants will understand the importance of evidence based treatment in working with traumatized youth.
  •  Participants will have a basic understanding of the components of TF-CBT
